Georgian Announces Collingwood Campus Name

It was a particularly good day for the Riding yesterday as we did have the unveiling of the name for the currently under construction site of the Collingwood campus of Georgian College. The name of the campus site is the “John DiPoce South Georgian Bay Campus”. John and Marie were on hand to receive some of the acknowledgements that are very well deserved. Mr. DiPoce as borne witness by Mr. Tony Miele has been a very generous benefactor in community projects across central Ontario. Yesterday it was also announced that a formal extension of the CAF funding of 4 million dollars (Federal Government monies) has been extended from March 31 2011 to October 31 2011. Mr. DiPoce has long recognized the value of education and this Post-Secondary Institution will benefit today’s students and the future needs of ever changing global economy. This institution is an economic catalyst that will pay dividends to Simcoe Grey residents forever. Congratulations to all but especially to John and Marie DiPoce for their generosity of spirit and community mindedness!

Vertical Farming in Simcoe Grey

What is vertical farming, well take a look folks! This is already occurring here in Simcoe-Grey! I actually tasted some arugula and lettuce growing from this new technology. Rather delicious. The production unit is cost effective and can yield a crop in about 6 weeks. The capital costs versus revenue generation is so far looking at about 1-30 (30 times the revenue). The costs of production are still be analyzed but at this small unit production level it looks like a bigger operation will certainly produce a bigger profit. The equipment can be produced locally and I gotta say it was pretty exciting to see this micro-operation up and running in person. Agriculture comes to Main Street everywhere ! This equipment can be set up almost anywhere but local planning regimes may require specific site zones but that is still under review. So we can produce our own food, locally and cost effectively in as small an area of about 16 square feet. I would say the 100 mile diet got a lot closer today!

Tremont Recognition

Richard and Anke Lex are pleased to announce that restoration of The Tremont has been awarded the Peter Stokes Restoration Award. This award, present annually by the Architectural Conservatory of Ontario, recognizes those responsible for the exemplary restoration of significant heritage structures, undertaken in accordance with the accepted policies and practices of heritage conservation in Ontario.

The award was presented at the annual ACO dinner held at the Arts and Letters Club in Toronto on Friday, November 19th.

The awards committee chair Susan Ratcliff noted that, “A once decrepit building ready for demolition is now a remarkable gem in Collingwood's downtown heritage district. This outstanding project raises the bar for the restoration of heritage architecture in Ontario, and will serve as a model for other dreamers across the province."

The award honours Peter Stokes, ACO’s pioneering restoration architect, best-known for bringing international standards of heritage conservation to his projects throughout the province. Mr. Stokes played a vital role in the early development of the Collingwood Heritage District. His work in 1981, with the help of architecture students from the University of Waterloo, provided the first background study to what would later become the Heritage Conservation District."

The Tremont project involved the preservation, restoration and revitalization of an important 1889 designated building in the Collingwood Heritage District and its adaptive reuse to provide commercial opportunities and live/work space for the creative sector. The historic Tremont building underwent a 16-month restoration beginning in June 2009. The building is now home to The Bay School of Art, The Tremont Cafe, The Elihu Book Room, nine artist studios and four third floor apartments.

Paramedic Services Launch the 2010 Toy Drive

The County of Simcoe Paramedic Services are pleased to announce the launch of the eighth Annual Toy Drive, benefitting local children and families during the holiday season. Donations of new, unwrapped toys will be accepted at various locations and parades across Simcoe County.

Since its inception, the County of Simcoe Paramedics Services Toy Drive has collected more than 20,000 toys, $30,000 and 7,600 pounds of food from the generous residents of Simcoe County. All donations will be distributed to local children and families in need by charitable organizations working in partnership with Simcoe County Paramedic Services. Residents are being asked for their continued generosity and support in helping those in our region most in need celebrate this holiday season.

Donations can also be made at the County of Simcoe Administration Centre, 1110 Highway 26 in Midhurst during regular business hours and at all Simcoe County Paramedic stations, where outdoor drop boxes are now available.

On behalf of Simcoe County Council, Warden Cal Patterson presented a cheque in the amount of $1,200,467 to Dan Carriere, President and CEO of Southlake Regional Health Centre.
The funding will be used to support the delivery of cancer care through the Regional Cancer Program at Southlake, projected to see a six-fold increase in patient visits by 2012.
“The County of Simcoe is continuing to honour our financial commitment to health care,” said Warden Cal Patterson. “This is just one of many significant investments in regional hospitals through the Simcoe County Hospital Alliance that County Council will be making to ensure our residents have access to high-quality health care here at home.”

In 2007, County Council committed $30 million in funding to the Simcoe County Hospital Alliance (SCHA) over a 10-year period to provide support for hospital capital projects. This SCHA is comprised of all the hospitals in the area, which provide care for County residents.

The Silver Creek Wetlands are one step closer to being protected and in public hands.

The Silver Creek Wetland is one of the last remaining coastal wetlands on southern Georgian Bay and it provides a variety of important biological, social and hydro-geological functions including flood control, water purification and sediment containment. The Silver Creek itself is the habitat for many species of fish including Brook Trout, Rainbow Trout and Chinook Salmon. The surrounding wetland is home to as many as 124 species of birds, numerous species of plants and the endangered spotted turtle. The Silver Creek Wetland is identified in the Town's planning documents as Category 1 Fish Habitat and Category 1 Provincially Significant Wetland - Silver Creek Wetland Complex.

In order to ensure that this rare environmental asset is preserved for future generations, Collingwood Council has had the foresight to secure an agreement with those who currently control the property that will ensure that the environmentally significant portions of the wetland are transferred into public hands. There will be more information in the coming weeks, and a formal announcement and dedication will be planned for the spring of 2011.

CIBC Run for the Cure

Mayor Chris Carrier brings greetings to over 1000 participants in the CIBC Run for the Cure Sunday morning in Collingwood. The 6th annual event raised 178,722.85 thus far. These monies will go along way to the elimination of breast cancer. The public awareness and edcuation campaing associated with such a strong event is invaluable and a huge thank you to Ms. Jen McNicol the Collingwood Run organizer. The Collingwood Run is host to neighbouring communities and visitors from all over Simcoe Grey, congratulations on a job so very well done!

OPP, Fire and Paramedics will have a new home in Stayner.

OPP, Fire and Paramedics will have a new home in Stayner. In response to concerns for better service delivery at a more affordable price, Provincial, Local and County levels of government were on hand for the ground breaking ceremony for the newest emergency operations centre in Simcoe County. This new 17,000 square foot building will host all three emergency responders in one building. This new emergency hub is but one example of the greater cooperation amongst service providers to ensure both effective and the efficient delivery of emergency services. Congratulations to Clearview, Springwater, Wasaga Beach and Essa Township residents on the construction and cooperation.

County injects cash into Alliston Hospital

Alliston’s Stevenson Memorial Hospital is one of Simcoe County’s many tremendous health-care institutions that provide residents with fabulous care and state-of-art services.

Simcoe County Council has in the past, and continues to recognize the importance of building strong partnerships with these institutions. With that in mind, the County will be presenting a cheque for $226,627 to Stevenson Memorial Hospital on September 29 at 9 a.m.

“The County of Simcoe has been always been a great long-standing supporter of Stevenson Memorial Hospital and ensuring that the residents of our community have access to high-quality care where they need it most—closer to home,” said Gary Ryan, President and CEO, Stevenson Memorial Hospital. “We gratefully acknowledge the support we’ve received from the County as it has allowed us to bring advanced diagnostic testing to our community through the addition of the hospital’s first state-of-the-art CT Suite.”

“We recognize the importance of a strong health-care sector in Simcoe County, and the role it plays in the lives of our residents,” said Warden Cal Patterson. “That is why County Council strives to ensure the development of strong affiliations with our health-care partners.”

The announcement is scheduled for Wednesday, September 29, 2010, at 9 a.m. at Stevenson Memorial Hospital, 200 Fletcher Crescent, Alliston, Ontario. The event is open to the public.

Stevenson Memorial Hospital is located in the community of Alliston, in the Town of New Tecumseth, Ontario. Situated one hour north of downtown Toronto, this fully accredited hospital is in the heart of central Ontario. SMH serves a catchment area that includes Adjala-Tosorontio, Canadian Forces Base Borden, Essa, Innisfil and New Tecumseth.

Chic Simonato Passes

Our community lost a treasure of a human being last evening. Mr. Chic Simonato (Chic) passed away at the Collingwood nursing home. Both Chic and Mary-Lou made me feel most welcome when I moved into their neighbourhood in 2006. Chic made me feel most welcome when I became an elected official in 1996. He made all of us feel that way. A lot of kind and heartfelt words will be said about our friend and neighbour in the next coming days especially thoughts of how we are such a better Town for his efforts. Our loss is great but it does pale in comparison to the loss for the Simonato family. I am asking that each and every one of us says a prayer of thanks for a life of generousity and further for thoughtful reflection on the loss of one Canada’s greatest generation and most certainly one of our Greatest Citizens, our friend Chic Simonato.

CARRIER TO SEEK CONSERVATIVE NOMINATION

Collingwood Mayor Chris Carrier declared today he is seeking the nomination as a candidate for the Federal Conservative Party for Simcoe-Grey. The seat is occupied by MP Helena Guergis, who is currently sitting as an Independent Member of Parliament. The Conservative Party has made it known to the local Electoral District Association (EDA) that a new Conservative candidate will be in place before the next federal election, which could come as early as the fall.
Mayor Carrier is the first from the Simcoe-Grey riding to officially declare his intention to put his name forward as a candidate for the nomination, once Ottawa gives the EDA a date to hold a Candidate Selection.
Mayor Carrier has served in municipal politics in Collingwood for thirteen years and sits on Simcoe County Council and on the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority. He served as Chair of the NVCA from 2003 – 2006.
Carrier stated, “As Mayor of a vibrant Simcoe-Grey community I have had the opportunity to present the local perspective to the federal vision and have been successful at engaging the Federal Government in support of local initiatives and concerns.
“I have advised The Honourable Helena Guergis, P.C., M.P. of my intention to seek the Conservative Party candidacy and I am grateful for what Ms. Guergis has done for our riding over the past years. I intend to continue and build upon all of the best work that has been done in this riding as a member of the Conservative Party caucus.”
Carrier’s term as Mayor continues until the first Monday in December 2010, when the Mayor-Elect will assume the reigns of the municipality.
The date has yet to be set for the Federal Nomination Meeting, but pundits speculate that Ottawa will give the word within a few weeks.

SHIPYARDS OPEN WATERFRONT PROMENADE FOR CANADA DAY CELEBRATION

Canada Day will be an exceptional occasion for Collingwood residents. The Shipyards, a master-planned residential community, the Town of Collingwood and Collingwood Downtown will officially open the newly revitalized waterfront promenade park on July 1, giving residents downtown access to Georgian Bay for the first time in over 100 years. The public celebration will commemorate The Shipyards’ 1,400-metre waterfront redevelopment, which includes the lakefront promenade park, open-air amphitheatre, wetlands and a fish habitat. Planned amenities include boat docking facilities, outdoor cafés, retail shops, and more than seven acres of green space connected to walking, biking and hiking trails.

“The Shipyards is very proud to have created a waterfront that is accessible to all of Collingwood’s residents and visitors,” says Bruce Kerr, president of Slokker Real Estate Canada. “This new waterfront promenade marks a milestone in Collingwood history, and we anticipate that it will be enjoyed for many years to come.”

Canada Day activities will begin at 10 am and continue until dark, filling Collingwood’s streets with scavenger hunts, sidewalk sales, dance demonstrations, a fashion show, Collingwood’s own Minute to Win It and live local music. A citizenship reaffirmation ceremony will take place in the Federal Building at noon where a Canadian flag birthday cake will be served.

The Grand Open ribon cutting cermony was held on Friday June 25th.

Ground Broken for Collingwood Campus

Educational opportunities for local students will be enhanced and expanded, after ground was broken for the first permanent home for a Collingwood Campus of Georgian College.

The new Collingwood campus is located on 10 acres of land generously donated by developer John DiPoce. Mayor Carrier said “It is also made possible by a $4-million contribution from the Community Adjustment Fund of the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario”.

The new building, open in the fall of 2011, will accommodate 250 full-time students and more than 3,000 part-time students annually.

The Government of Canada and the Town of Collingwood today celebrated the Grand Opening Ceremony of the new Collingwood Public Library and Municipal Offices. The new building was officially inaugurated by Canada’s Finance and Regional Minister Jim Flaherty, Mayor of the Town of Collingwood Chris Carrier, and representatives from the Library Board of Directors. Jim Wilson, Member of Provincial Parliament for Simcoe—Grey, was also in attendance to extend congratulatory wishes.
“The new public library and municipal offices will offer additional resources and services, encourage learning, and foster a sense of community here in Collingwood,” said Canada’s Finance and Regional Minister Jim Flaherty. “Our government is proud to be working with municipalities to support environmentally friendly infrastructure that Canadians will use and depend on every day.”
"Money from the Federal Gas Tax Fund is permitting the Town of Collingwood to create one of the most environmentally-friendly public buildings in Canada," says Mayor Chris Carrier. "The Municipal Council is approving a new Collingwood Public Library and Municipal Offices building and is committed to achieving a Gold LEED standard for energy and environmental design, which includes the installation of a Green Roof. Utilizing the Gas Tax Funding to the building, Council will be able to provide the citizens of Collingwood with an outstanding example of modern and environmentally-responsible design."
The new three-storey, 30,000-square-foot building consists of two library floors, a third floor to house offices for the town’s building and planning department, a recording studio and meeting space. Several green features make the building unique, highlighted by a green roof that provides natural insulation, a rainwater collection system and an energy recovery ventilator. The Town of Collingwood owns the building, and is in the final stages of pursuing Gold LEED (Leadership in Environmental Energy and Design) status; an international certification recognizing the design of high performance green buildings.

Residents of Collingwood helped cook up a cure to support the 22nd Annual M&M Meat Shops Charity BBQ Day benefiting Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of Canada. M&M Meat Shop staff and hundreds of volunteers grilled hamburgers and hot dogs to meet the 2010 Canadian fundraising goal of $2 million. A special thanks to Garnet & Roselle Reid, M&M Owners.

Collingwood is host to some of the most beautiful waterfront in Ontario. After 100 plus years of industrial use and no public access, the FRAM/SLOCKER Shipyard Promenade will open on July 1st 2010. Come and celebrate with us the newest addition to Collingwood’s trail system and see for the first time some of our most beautiful vistas. Collingwood Council is proud of our heritage but we are even more proud of the access to our waterfront this brown field development has created for all residents and visitors alike.

Great news today from the Federal Government.

Georgian College has received a 4 million dollar grant. What makes this great news for Collingwood is that Georgian College has long wanted a permanent site in Collingwood. The future location and site plans will be revealed later this month but we do know that Georgian College has been in discussions with Mr. John DiPoce of Dipoce Management about a possible partnership in their 150 acre employment park in Collingwood. Georgian College locating here would be a catalyst for significant private sector investment within the park and huge employment opportunites for Collingwood and neighbouring communities. Collingwood is eagerly awaiting more details to be revealed by Georgian College President Brian Tamblyn, Mr. John Dipoce and his team of Mr. Tony Miele of DiPoce Management and Ms. Kris Menzies of MHBC planning. The Town of Collingwood received 1.57 million dollars in funding from the Community Adjustment Fund and used those monies to bring municipal infrastructure to the 150 acre employment site boundaries. Mr. Ed Houghton, Ms. Catharine Durrant and CAO Ms. Kimberly Wingrove were integral to Team Collingwood's successful grant application. Collingwood Council has made the development of a permanent Post Secondary Institution a priority for Collingwood. I must say that much work is yet to be done before any Students are in any buildings and details are yet to be revealed but I remain confident that the Partners remain dedicated to the objective of a permanent home for Georgian College and a huge economic boost for Collingwood, Clearview Township, Wasaga Beach and the Blue Mountains. This announcement is one of the most exciting opportunites realized in a very long time.

County Council Elects New Warden

County Council elects new Warden in December 2009. Mayor of Wasaga Beach (and good friend) Cal Patterson received unanimous support from County Council. I had predicted earlier that morning to the media, some County Colleagues and former Warden and Collingwood Mayor Terry Geddes, that Warden Guergis would not accept the nomination for a possible fourth term; that Site 41 - amongst other issues - had been agonizing for many; and that a new Warden should be acclaimed - providing a unifiying moment, instead of a bitter defeat by the incumbent. County Politics is an interesting experience at times. Cal is seen here receiving the Chain of Office from his partner in life, Deb. It was an emotional day for many.

In support of its pledge to create a sustainable community, Council continues to make presentations of financial support to various not-for-profit organizations this week and next.

My Friends House, an agency that provides shelter to women and their children escaping domestic violence, received a cheque in response to a grant application made to the Town earlier this year. Presenting the cheque to Alison Fitzergerald, Executive Director of My Friends House are, Councilor Tim McNabb, Mayor Chris Carrier and Board member, Kim McNabb.

The Town also presented a cheque to The Door Youth Centre. Accepting the $10,000.00 cheque are Aaron and Danielle White, Directors of The Door Youth Centre along with Greg Goldsworthy.

At Eklectika, a boutique of arts and crafts from local artists and craft persons, Carrier purchased an elegant glass pen and then proceeded to donate it to a silent auction to be held as a fund raising event for My Friend's House. During the week celebrating International Women's Day, Eklectika shop owners will donate $5.00 from every purchase of a line of beautiful glass desk top items to the local shelter.
"As a past board member at the House and supporter of women's issues, I am surprised that International Women's Day and the week celebrating women's achievements are not more visible". Today was a real bonus... I got to support a local, female new business owner, a day of international recognition of women and a local charity that provides much needed services to women and their children of our community. Couldn't be better!"

The Canadian Tire Cup Shinny Tournament

The Canadian Tire Cup Shinny Tournament organized by The Rotary Club of Collingwood, South Georgian Bay and sponsored by Canadian Tire (Collingwood) and Toppers Pizza.

This was the 6th year for the event, but first year with an open and Masters divisions (over 35). We raised over $5000. And the monies will go back to the community .

The open division , CT Cup, was won by the “CVFB Flames” (Volunteer Brigade for Fire Department) their 3rd year in a row. The Toppers Pizza Cup was won by the “Jokers” (team from the Toronto area) in the Masters Division.
